This is a rare opportunity! Vote YES, and let Congress know how you feel about the prohibition!! Prohibition of substances like alcohol and marijuana can not work. Prohibition contains no mechanism to eliminate demand, and without removing demand there is no chance of ever ending supply. That is the reason why after seventy years of prohibition we still have marijuana in this country, and why we still have drug dealers in our communities, and why minors are able to buy marijuana whenever they want and without being carded. That is the reason why prohibition of alcohol was ended and why the legalization policy that replaced it is lauded as a tremendous success. Legalization eliminated demand for illegal alcohol and eliminated bootleggers from our communities! Legalization of marijuana will do the same thing to drug dealers. End the prohibition and apply the *same* laws to marijuana that are used to control alcohol! Parents of America are not some "fringe" group, we are mainstream America. We love our children and demand better for them than what prohibition can offer. Vote YES and send the right message to Congress!

Dr. Wagoner had first hand experience on how marijuana can help. Mr. Hartrum, your wife is healthy. Try to understand Dr. Wagoner's position.

If it has a medical use, it should be prescribed just like other medications. It's a slippery slope... If someone purchases it, who determines what is a valid medical condition/use?

Jillian on October 17, 2008 at 8:11 AM

The war on drugs is a joke! When will it be won?? ..when there are no drug users left in America? That will be NEVER!!! There are fifteen million marijuana users alone and more people pick it up every day. Do prohibitionists honestly believe they can eliminate the demand for marijuana entirely. What nonsense! Prohibition is a failed policy. Just look at what it's done to alcohol and marijuana! Prohibition eliminates legal supply but has negligible effect on demand. This demand when coupled with zero legal supply draws criminals into our communities seeking to make quick, and substantial, profits. And profit they do!!! Their presence in our schools and communities puts our children at risk and endangers public safety. Legalization of alcohol virtually eliminated the accessibility of minors to alcohol and rid our communities of bootleggers. Applying the same laws to marijuana will do the same thing to drug dealers!! We care about our children and we work hard to raise them well. We believe they deserve a better future than what prohibition can offer. End the prohibition and apply the *same* laws to marijuana that we use to control alcohol!

I agree with the Dr. Marijuana should be prescribed by Drs. for medical use if the doctor thinks it would help. Marijuana if you want it can be found on the streets if you want it for other reasons pretty readily.

Marijuana has been proven Not to be a Gate-Way drug; the police are foolish and uneducated in the area of marijuana. The authorities use marijuana and marijuana users to fund their private operations through various forfeitures, homes, cars , etc. Which is complete corruption if you ask me. Marijuana is a Victimless crime yet is treated more seriously in court than sex offenders, how can this be tolerated? There are close to 2 million people in American prisons at this very moment, well over half are there for possession alone! Once again how can this be tolerated? - There have been close to a dozen studies on the Gateway theory, applied to marijuana, and none have proven it to be a "gate-way" drug. -As for the theory of marijuana legalization causing an increase in marijuana use has also been disproven, Canada as well as Amsterdam have seen a decline in the use as well as the amount of users since legalization (or decriminalization). Yet people still believe that legalization would cause a problem. -The media as well as our government have brainwashed us through a barrage of anti-marijuana ads on TV as well as radio and even in the movie theatre! Marijuana has been proven to be more safe then even aspirin! -There has never been a SINGLE death recorded in History due to marijuana use alone, Not one death. In closing let me say that Prohibition is a load of crap and it cause much more problems than it could ever solve as stated by ‘Jillian’ and various studies conducted around the world. I believe before people make false claims towards marijuana and its effects on society should read a book and get the facts CORRECT! Prohibition fills prisons with Victimless offenders and causes the early release of violent criminals who belong in prison. Marijuana should be legal and sold, taxed, and controlled by our government as alcohol is currently. You want to boost the collapsing economy? Do as stated above. Marijuana sales as well as taxes would help our economy in unimaginable revenue. The drug industry is big business over 48 billion dollars a year! God gave us marijuana and our brains yet we do not use our brains to think for our selves. We believe what we learn in school in D.A.R.E class, we are taught to hate and fear marijuana from childhood. This also can be applied to the “gate-way theory”. We are taught marijuana is bad, when we first use marijuana we see that is it not what we are taught, well hey my next thought is what else have they lied to use about? This is where further experimentation comes into play, which can be avoidable with proper education of the harm that “Hardcore drugs” can cause.

Police efforts should be concentrated on Methamphetamine, not marijuana. Dr. Wagoner is right in his support of the proposal.

Mrs.E on October 19, 2008 at 8:15 PM

Vote yes! Sounds like a propaganda routine for job security from law enforcement. Come on fellas - go after the big stuff instead. Legalize it. Tax it! Eliminate a chunk of the national debt! It's about time. Would certainly rather share the road with someone "stoned" on pot rather than drunk... ANY day of the week! Vote YES!

Rip on October 19, 2008 at 8:16 PM

Im glad that people are shining the light on the subject of marijuana. It helps people with depression, nausea, sleeping issues, pain, and who knows what else. Its time for change in this world. Its rediculous how much tax dollars we are paying to throw people in jail over something I would consider small. Liquor is far mare dangerous than marijuana, and you are certain to deal with terrible consequences when it comes down to heavy drinkers. It confuses me why people have their heads shoved up their butts when there is much proof that no one has died or been sick from the use of marijuana. There are alot more positives than negatives when it really comes down to the subject....and yes it will work, not to be chummy, but if you have faith in anything it'll work. Lets not be so simple minded!

go blue: The federal government will not allow for regular doctor prescriptions. That's why they have to set it up this way. People will still have to have a doctor recommend marijuana in writing though. They'll have to get a medical marijuana card. Will some who aren't sick end up getting these cards? Sure they will, but look at how many are who don't need it are getting prescriptions for hardcore narcotic pain medications and drugs like Xanax and that sort of thing. These drugs are more addictive and more dangerous than marijuana, especially the narcotics. This law will protect the good people out there who are sick and who aren't responding well to other medications. The other people who want to smoke pot are already smoking it. It's already relatively cheap and easily available everywhere in Michigan and every other state for that matter. A few people getting medical marijuana cards won't make a lick of difference in the illegal marijuana trade or in the number of people using it for "recreational purposes," even if some of the people who get these cards are just doing it to get high without fear of arrest. The fact is that most pot smokers never get caught anyway because they do it at home and the police never even know they are doing it. They know the chance of getting caught is miniscule. This law will allow those who are really sick and who could benefit from it to grow a little and have a little without having to worry about getting arrested. If the program is abused some, as it most likely will be, it's really not going to make a difference in the grand scheme of things because there is already tons of pot out there for people who want it and those who want to use it for recreational purposes who aren't deterred by all the other good reasons not to smoke it are not deterred by the remote possibility of getting caught and maybe having to pay a fine or something. They're already smoking it anyway.

Sheriff Hartrum believes that the "use of medical marijuana should be dictated by science, not public opinion,” The problem with that thinking is that it totally skews reality: At present, with medical marijuana being legally prohibited, the use of medical marijuana _is_ being dictated to us by public opinion as a result of antiquated laws that prevent doctors from prescribing marijuana to those that need it medically. I am voting Yes on this proposal.

Ben on October 19, 2008 at 8:17 PM

I'm sure stopping "Prohibition" is your reason for wanting to legalize marijuana. Keep telling yourself that. Vote no to legalize the drug.

Angie on October 19, 2008 at 8:17 PM

I think it should be OK ONLY for those who have cancer and are very ill. NOT if you have a migraine headache.. I have seen people that had cancer I know the pain they went through.

Melissa on October 22, 2008 at 6:59 AM

Vote Yes on Proposal 1!!! Hartrum - you're out in a month anyway, don't worry about it!
