Not only did he risk his own life by picking up the device and putting it in his truck, but he endangered the lives of everyone at the Road Commission building. Not to mention the countless numbers of people he probably drove by on the roads on the way back to Scottville. Common sense should have prevailed here. As a Ludington native, and having served in a law enforcement capacity in the US Marines for the past ten years, I offer this advice to everyone. If you come across a device that you think/suspect/believe has ANY chance of being explosive in nature, do NOT touch it, do NOT move it. Call 9-1-1 IMMEDIATELY!! I know that I would (and I'm sure most of the area law enforcement agencies would agree) rather respond to an inert piece of broken pipe out in the middle of a pit, than have to cordon off a blast site containing numerous casualties. I hope this situation can serve as a learning tool for the community as a whole. Sincerely, Sergeant Nathan DeWeerd US Marine Corps Military Police Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Arizona
