How about some "fuel efficient" vehicles? Green? Tahoe and Crown Victorias? What are you all thinking up there in a county with your unemployment buying these types of vehicles, expensive gas guzzlers???? Someone needs to keep tighter tabs on you all and bring you back to some semblance of reality here in 2009.

Cathy- I understand your point, but you also have to look at the fact that you aren't finding many fuel efficient vehicles that are going to be useful in deep snow or off road. And when it comes to a car chase, or a police officer in a hurry, I would rather them drive a V8 and get there, than a little fuel efficient 4-banger and take there time winding up the rubberband to get it going. There are times that you need performance, and I would say that a police vehicle should perform.

How about some good vehicle that the cops can use so that they get where they need to get without mechanical problems so what if they use more gas/fuel as long as they protect and serve it really dosent matter

Do you know what vehicles are actually made for police use? There are not alot of options, Crown Vic's are being phased out, so that leaves Chargers, not good on gas at all, Tahoe's and Impala's as the other main ones, and depending on the use some impalas are ok and some will have to use Tahoe's. You cant get a hybrid Tahoe in a police package yet so that is ok. I am sure the sheriff is doing the best he can within his budget and with the options out there.

As of right now, there are NO vehicles manufactured specifically for police use. And as has been already said, police performance and environmentally friendly aren't two phrases that mesh well together. There is, however, a company in Atlanta that is deep into final stages of research and develoment of a purpose-built vehicle for law-enforcement. It's powered by a bio-deisel engine that will get 30-40mpg. Sheriff Fiers has already been made aware of the company, but the vehicles will not be available for purchase until late 2010. Take a look at www.carbonmotors.com for more information.

Cathy is right; and Nate says a green-type police vehicle will be available next year. So why can't the dpw, city, and county officials also follow suit with green-type vehicles. They are available to them in civilian form, and they should have had them for some time now I believe. As for police/sheriff, maybe some road patrols need to remain gas for now; but they also have a host of other non-patrol vehicles in use that they could make green. This country has talked about serious oil independence since 1973, that's 36 years of talk. Let's get with the program now at long last.
