Of the 15 accidents at that corner only six were failure to yield. How many accidents at washington and tinkham have been failure to yield at the 4 way stop?
That 4 way stop has me confused. Only 1% of all Lud. auto accidents have happened there in the last 5 years, so that's an issue. And why did 114 people sign a petition for this?? Maybe it's hard to go east-west a few months in the summer, but not year around. Maybe a blinking signal lite temporarily, but 4 way stop is not a good idea. JMO
Of course everyone is going to complain about putting in a 4 way stop. It is change. And we all know how much a little change makes people complain. I am for it. The majority of the traffic at that intersection is East-West or north bound traffic turning east or west. Very little going straight through north or south, yet they have the right of way. Also, with the Northside Market parking lot right at that corner, along with the soccer fields and church close by, that corner can be somewhat confusing. It isn't uncommon for people to stop at that corner even when they have the right of way. Putting in a 4-way stop won't hurt anyone, and can only help, so quite whining about it.
Too bad the city council chooses to spend so much time on this kind of issue instead of focusing on a real traffic issue like the useless stoplight setup downtown...... Then again if the city council would also ban deer from crossing Bryant and Washington roads near this intersection, That could reduce the accident numbers there by 33% more.
People are always flying out of Northside and they come out on the side that has the right of way after not even stopping on the way out drive. I have seen several times where someone who was stopped started to drive because it was clear only to have to slam on their brakes because someone who pulled out of Northside came flying out in front of them. I drive that way 2 times EVERY weekday.
This is a terrible corner. I have lived just north of that area for 15 years. People constantly do the Michigan stop or just never stop. I would have liked to sign the petition. And just because those are recorded accidents, doesn't account for the near misses. Instead of complaining of a four way stop at Washington and Bryant that is really and truely needed, why don't you complain of the 3 way stop on Monona, now that is ridiculous. I also happened to have an accident there, the guy just kept on going through the intersection, he never stopped at the stop sign. As I tried to move out of the way, he just kept going. I don't know how many times that my husband and I slow way down or stop because someone else is not obeying the stop sign.
I live in this area and am one of the 114 who signed. Yes there have been only 15 accidents, but I have seen many many close calls. I have small children and walk this way during the summer. People do not look and routinely run the sign. Plus as a previous reader mentioned, people leaving Northside market sometime come out at an angle and I guess feel they do not need to obey the traffic pattern. I use this intersection at minimum twice a day and usually more, there is no harm with making this a 4 way stop, and it will probably help. It's not like making this a 4 way stop is going to cause anyone any type of major time delay.
