How many more times must we hear stories about 14 year old naked boys with large white poodles escaping from behavioral facilities before we take finally decide to take action?!

To the dunce who wrote the first comment. Your version of the law matters not. What matters is what the legislature adopted and the governor signed into law. The woman was assaulted when the boy hit her and grabbed the phone. His taking the phone with intent to deprive her of it was the robbery. We hold people accountable for their acts. If the boy is found to be unable to formulate the requisite intent because of his mental state, then he may skate on the charges, but the state is likely to move him to a far more secure facility. The woman may sue the facility that twice failed to supervise him adequately by allowing him to escape.

The kid committed a strong-arm robbery because he committed a theft by force. The assault/battery charge is because he PUSHED the victim. Someone should be looking into this behavioral facility. Why not name the facility? Why is there a dog available? You'd think that in one of these facilities, the dogs would be locked away from the patients as well. If so, he has to break in there, and then break out altogether. I agree with Don and Monroe in that the charges here were over-rated and the 14 year old kid did not have proper supervision to begin with. Is it the kid's fault? NO! He definitely has mental issues that need to be addressed with psychiatrists and other counselors and medications. Charging a mentally challenged youth with felonies is not going to cure him, nor make society safer. The facility in question muffed the ball twice in a row with the same patient, and that administrator and staff stand fully accountable by law and common sense. Even the police here knew who it was the SECOND TIME! I just hope the judge in Saginaw sees it this way and gets him the needed help. He is not going to be any regular citizen after serving a long jail/prison sentence; he will probably sink deeper into depression/regression and be more hostile than ever when released down the road. That isn't a positive for him nor society later.

I wouldn't get too up in arms about this boy being charged with these crimes. Often the way our legal and mental health system works requires someone to break a law and face serious crimes to involuntarily bind them into mental health treatment. Until a person is forced by the court system to address mental illness because they are a danger to themselves or others, it's voluntary. I highly doubt he'll ever see a day of actual jail time over the situation..

This kid has mental issues, get him some help. He is not a felon, BUT if you treat him like one, he may become one. There does seem to be a problem with the institution he was in.

This boy has a Mental Illness.. get over it, he got away from his boundries, someone dropped the ball and let him wander away, this is the consequence, live and learn. I work with children with mental illness everyday. Everyday I get hit, kicked, bit scratched. Charges are not brought against them every time They do it. These kids need compassionate care not neglegent care which this is obviously a result of. OFten these kids can be doing just great in a facility and deemed "JUST FINE" and instantly change to relapse back to something again. Blame it on the STATE AND GOVERNMENT SHUTTING DOWN STATE FACILITIES TO HELP HANDLE THESE CASES.
